How do I stop dust from entering my home?

How do I stop dust from entering my home? This is a question the essentially every householder asks when a thin layer of dust is visible in the house, soon after the dusting and cleaning is completed. It not only gives an untidy look but also creates several health issues especially for individuals with weak immune systems and children. Many a times, harmful bacteria like mold spores also travel through these particles in our houses. To avoid catching an infection due to molds, it is recommended that we should keep a check on the dust that enters our premise. We should also get mold testing done from time to time to keep away from these harmful fungi.

From where does these dust particles come from?

Dust particles have many sources to enter our house, but one of the most universal ways through which dust enters our apartment are through air leaks. Air leaks are generally developed in our house in locations like ceilings, walls, windows, doors and other panels. One of the knottiest places to have air leaks in our house is through the air ducts. When we have air leaks in our ducts, it creates pathways for dust particles to travel through them and enter the indoor space and get layered in unwanted places.

What are Air Ducts?

Ducts are what we generally use in our house and office for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) purpose. They deliver and remove air from the closed space of living and work place. They also deliver, most commonly as part of the supply air, ventilation air. Thus, they are one method of ensuring high quality indoor air as well as thermal comfort.

Air ducts are prone to mold growth as well. It is due to the atmosphere that is created inside the ducts when they circulate the air inside out. In doing so, moisture gets accumulated in the vents and creates a favorable circumstance for molds to grow and infect the our breathing air. To check the growth of molds, it is necessary to keep the air ducts clean. We should hire mold remediation experts and ask them to clean our air duct so that our house always remains mold free.

How to clean the Duct?

Getting our air ducts cleaned is a necessary step if we notice too much dust in our house. It is also important if we feel the presence of molds in our breathing space. The signs could be visible molds, their moldy smell or dark patches on walls and ceilings. So, if we start noticing too much dust and signs of harmful bacteria, we should immediately hire the mold removal experts and get our house cleaned.

However, as per the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - "If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary." Thus, before entering into a contract with any mold remediation company, we should analyze whether or not to hire the mold cleanup company for air duct cleanup.
